“Daddy, when can I have my party?”

I can’t tell if Daddy’s just distracted, but it takes him a minute to answer. “How about this afternoon.”

Daddy’s blue eyes turn softer and he lifts me onto his lap. “I love you, too, baby girl.” His hand slides up under my dress and he fingers my nipple. “Whose nipples are these?” he says.

“Daddy’s.”

I want Daddy to make the tingles turn into waves again but his phone rings.

Kathy, the screen says.

Daddy’s fingers slide away. “Mommy doesn’t need to know about our games, either, right, Layla?”

“Our games are just for us, Daddy. I know.”

Daddy kisses my lips, then he picks up the phone. “Hi,” he says. “I’m putting you on speaker, Kathy. Layla’s right here.”

“Hi, honey.”

“Hi, Mommy. How’s your trip going?”

“They’ve offered me job out here. A good one.”

“Oh, wow, Mommy.”

“That’s great news,” says Daddy. “Congratulations.”

“Thank you, Dallas.” Mommy reminds me I need to remember to call Daddy by his name when other people are listening. “They want me to start right away. It’s going to be intense. Probably eighty hour weeks to begin with. But the money’s good.”

“That’s a lot of hours, Mommy.”

“Yes. I’ll send you a plane ticket, honey. So you can come out here next week.”

“No, Mommy. I want to stay with Dallas.”

“Honey—”

“It’s fine, Kathy,” Daddy says. “It sounds like your workload means Layla would be alone most of the time anyway. She might as well stay here. She’s no trouble. And she’s having fun. A few of her friends are coming over this afternoon for a swim.”

“Are you sure she’s no trouble? Layla, are you behaving?”

“Yes, Mommy.”

“She’s been perfect,” Daddy says. “We’re having a good time.”

I grin at Daddy.

Mommy seems unsure. “Are you sure you’re okay with that, Layla?”

“I like living with Dallas.” I don’t say it, but living with Dallas is so much more fun than living with Mommy. She works all the time. And it’s a lot more fun than my strict boarding school.

“She’s been very sheltered, Dallas,” Mommy says. “She’s not very worldly. You’ll take good care of her, won’t you?”

“Of course I will,” Daddy says.

Mommy hesitates, but then she says, “All right. Well, we’ll have to talk about the longer term arrangement, but I guess for now it sounds like a good solution. Thank you, Dallas.”

“My pleasure.”

This makes me giggle again when I think of Daddy’s pleasure. All that cream.

“Bye, Mommy.”

“Bye, honey. Have fun.”

We end the call and Daddy leans me over his desk on my tummy.
